Simone apologizes in advance for his cussin'

Dammit! Mama is all up in my biz-ness about my pee again.

She said I might have to go back for bladder sludge treatment. I have been doing fine all summer, but the past two mornings she has found sludgy urine on the floor of my cage (outside of the litter box). She's freakin' out a little.

She told the vet, who said I might need another catheter/flush treatment. You wanna bet? Seriously, you wanna be the one to do that to me? Hrmph. Anyway, the vet said to give me Baytril for a oouple of days, and then if that doesn't help, I might have to be sedated again for the flushing.

This is enough to make me cuss, and I am not a cussin' bunny. I only say dammit once in awhile, and now is one of those times.

Also, Mama is confused because the vet has told her to limit my diet to only timothy hay and pellets, that leafy greens are bad for my bladder. (This elicits another "Dammit" from me, the green loving bun that I am.) However, her research online indicates that fresh, leafy greens are essential and if anything, pellets should be removed or limited. She has restricted them mostly since my last sludge episode, and yet it has returned. I keep telling her to just give me more greens, but she is not sure which advice is better? Anyone else have experience with the evil sludge monster?

Help! Earlier this spring, I had a major case of bladder sludge and had to stay at the vet for treatment. Mama said the doctor used a catheter to flush the sludge out of my bladder. Hrmph! They better be glad I slept through all that. Too bad I didn't miss out on all the Baytril that followed for two weeks.

Now I am always on guard around Mama.
What if she has more Baytril? The horror!

I was rummaging through my dad's mail and found a catalog that looked interesting. I sniffed and dug at it a little. Know what happened? My pug brother walked over, looked at the catalog, looked at me, looked at me nibbling the catalog... and... he took it away! He took MY catalog and carried it across the room where he began chewing on it. Hrmph! To make matters worse, Mama thought this was funny! She laughed and then took the catalog away from us.

A Bun's Home is His Castle

Friends, Mama and I want to thank each and every one of you for your kind words, healing wishes, and furrrrayers. And we are sorry it has taken so long to post an update, but silly Mama forgot the blogger password! Hrmph.

I'm feeling a lot better. I eat all my greens now, and carrots, cilantro and parsley. I eat my Oxbow hay and pellets too. I have been drinking water on my own for a few weeks! I am slowly gaining my weight back. Not sure if you've ever tried gaining weight, but it's hard to do when all you eat is hay, timothy pellets and fresh veggies! Mama needs to spice up my diet, throw in some hash brown casserole or somethin'.

It means a lot that you were all rooting for me to get better and it definitely played a part in my recovery. You definitely helped Mama get through those dreadful force-feeding sessions! She might still have to get a blood test and x-rays done to see what caused me to have problems, but for now she's just trying to fatten me up.

Oh, can't forget to thank Karen Jo for her AWESOME limerick about me. She totally rocks!!! She's right too, that pug can be rude. Hrmph.

Oh, hi friends. Thanks for your good wishes. Mama said to tell you I've been eating a little better since last night, and that I want my greens and carrots. Actually, I will only eat turnip greens at the moment, but at least it's a green.

The injections are no fun at all! I hate them, and this morning I really kicked up a fuss so Mama only got half the fluid into my body. I drank some water from a syringe though. Not much, but some, and that's better than before.

Okay, I'm gonna go wash the icky goo off my chin from a forcefeeding session. Hrmph.

Mama prays that I get better.

Vertigo was easy compared to this

To Simone's friends, two-legged and four-legged:

Simone's health is not good. He seemed okay up until last week, but apparently has been losing weight gradually, so slowly that I did not notice until recently. He had still been eating like a pig and drinking plenty of water. Last week I noticed his hair seemed thin, but suspected the inconsistent weather might have triggered something odd with his shedding patterns, etc. and then on Christmas Eve he suddenly STOPPED eating and drinking. It was then I noticed his weight loss because he seemed frail when I picked him up. Apparently it was noticeable because he was dehydrated.

We immediately drove him to the vet and she placed him on a regimen of daily fluid injections, force feeding 4x daily, baytril and a probiotic to keep good bacteria in his system. He eats very little and would not even eat a baby carrot this morning. He refuses to drink anything.

I had to take him back to the vet today because I wasn't having success with the injections, so she let me practice in front of her to be sure I was doing okay with it, and now I can have better luck at home (rabbits have tough skin and it is scary trying to inject a tiny little bun with that long needle).

Between Monday and today, Simone has lost more weight. He is normally 5 pounds or so, and now he is only 3.1 pounds. His vet suspected he would only lose this much weight for two reasons: cancer or kidney failure. From the sound of it, kidney failure sounds a bit worse. However, neither one is good news.

She is afraid to do any tests on him (until he regains strength) because trauma from testing could cause him to decline faster. However, she emphasized that I should "be prepared for the worst" although "there's a chance we can get him back on track and we'll hope for that, but it's also possible we are going to be discussing quality-of-life decisions soon."

I am hoping and praying for him to recover from this and be able to overcome whatever has caused him to stop eating and drinking. I really wish I had noticed sooner that he was losing the weight. He might have a better chance if I had been handling him more attentively. There are probably lots of things I would have noticed more quickly if I had really been paying attention to the little details.

One good thing, Simone's vet does NOT think he is in pain, because he does at least try to eat a few bites here and there. He just feels very weak and tired.

The prognosis is scary, but we are doing our best to help little Simone feel better. I wish I had noticed sooner that he was getting sick. All we can do is help him from here and make sure he feels loved and supported. I really hope he has a lot more time left with us. Things wouldn't be the same without the little guy.

Wow. I am overwhelmed by your generous wishes and purrayers for Simone, and your suggestions and thoughts. They must be working because this morning, he actually ate a turnip green from my hand!

The last two nights he has begrudgingly eaten the concoction of water and powdered nutrients from a syringe, occassionally nibbling a strand of hay or a stem or two of cilantro. (And his two daily papaya tablets.) But today he ate a turnip green, and seems to be eating a little more hay. At least the eating is improving, and maybe that's an indication Simone is feeling a little better.

Baytril must taste really awful. While Simone doesn't care for anything in a syringe, he protests the medication even more. He hates Baytril with a passion. Even through all the forcefeeding and medicating, Simone remains a gentle bun. He kicks and thumps, but never does he try to bite.

That said ... after the syringe is put away, you would be amazed at the looks he gives. I did not realize how many ways a bun can say "SCREW YOU" with his eyes! Or in his words, hrmph!

Vertigo

Simone thanks his friends for the prayers and thoughts. His vet has diagnosed him with head tilt caused by inner ear infection. No tests were done, but the diagnosis is based on signs of head tilt, vertigo (dizziness), some trouble with balance, and inside one of his ears seems to be inflamed. He recommended that Simone be given a broad spectrum antibiotic for 10 days, and we should see improvement in about 3 days. He said Simone has a good chance of recovery because he is still fairly young (just over five years) and he drinks his water. He fed Simone crushed food through a syringe.

I have mixed feelings on this - most of the websites I find on head tilt and inner ear problems say antibiotics are recommended for a whole month at the LEAST. Ten days seems insufficient by this description. Some of them make it sound like the prognosis of the bun returning to normal is terrible, others suggest his chance for recovery is good. I'm banking on that one, but just want to be sure I don't screw it up.

This is a new vet and I don't want to overwhelm them with challenges and questions, but they also didn't mention cecotropes. (Fi, don't tell Simone you read that or it might embarass him.) If he has trouble eating, he might not get his cecotropes and that would be bad! However, the vet didn't mention if I need to somehow help him with this.

I feel terrible for not always giving Simone the attention and time he deserves. If I had paid closer attention to him over the last day or so, I would have noticed changes sooner. One positive about this, however, is it might help Simone and Mama reconnect a bit. It just really sucks for Simone. He's gotta be really confused and puzzled by all of this.

Simone stopped eating sometime yesterday or last night. This morning he was lethargic and only moved if I touched his stomach or feet, then he hopped away. He doesn't act like he hurts as his teeth aren't grinding or anything, but he is not himself.

He will only eat papaya tablets, and even those he ate hesitantly.

I took him to a new vet, as his regular vet is off today. A friend at work and our regular vet's office said this new place is wonderful with bunnies and exotics. Simone is there and might not be seen by the doc until this afternoon, but he will get fluids and some attention this morning.

It would mean a lot to Simone (and Mama) if his wonderful friends whisper a tiny prayer for him when they have a moment. I am thinking he will be okay but who knows until the vet calls with an update.

The last couple weeks have been a little odd. Besides that starvation issue, Mamma and Dadda put me in this bigger cage. It has floors and stuff. I can go up and down if I want. It's a cool place to hang out.

And they just put in some thingie that's sorta like a litter box, but it's got somethin' around the top. Hrmph. BRILLIANT Mama! Are you tryin' to say I made too much of a mess with my old one?

B-b-but... what I can't figure out... is they got my present in the mail two weeks ago in those big boxes. They were supposed to give it to me by now, and I still haven't seen the neverending parsley stalk! Hrmph.

Thanks for your thoughts and concerns, everybunny. When Mama finally got home last night and I finally got to eat somethin', I was happy to see that bowl full of pellets. She stuffed my hay loft full and this morning I was munching on the remains of that hay. Mama saw the round "presents" I left in the litterbox and was overjoyed. So much that she treated me with a papaya tablet, and gave me breakfast which I devoured.

Do you all still think I should see a vet? Mama hasn't taken me 'cause I'm acting okay and frankly, I don't wanna be stuck with a needle. B-b-but if you still think I should go, she might take me anyway tomorrow. She mentioned somethin' about snuggle time tonight, and listening to see if my teeth are grinding or if I am just doing the soft tooth purr thingie. What do y'all think?

Still no word from the petsitting folks. Nothin'. Nada. Maybe somethin' happened, some kinda emergency. But even then, they got more than one person working there, and if somethin' happened to my sitter, someone coulda called Mama or Dadda on the cell phones while they were out. 'Cause it's really important that I eat! Hrmph.

Thought I was never gonna get fed again... Hrmph. *nose wiggle*

Livid

This is Simone's Mama. I will be brief.

We went to Atlanta this weekend and made petsitting arrangements. We got home tonight. Simone is in his cage and seems okay, but his petsitter NEVER SHOWED UP! Our mail was still in the box, the key was still in its hiding spot and the check was never picked up. And poor Simone has not been fed ALL WEEKEND long! So I gave him pellets, hay and a papaya tablet and hope he will be okay.

If you have a bunny, you know how risky it is for your bun not to eat in over 24 hours. The good news is Simone is eating his food. The bad news is he doesn't seem all that ravenous the way a truly hungry bunny eats. He also stopped eating while I cleaned up his cage, and his teeth were grinding loudly. I hope that doesn't mean he is sick. It could mean he was upset and/or wanting attention. I petted him some but hope he eats his hay tonight and is alright. Fortunately, his water bottle was full when we left for the trip, so he had something to drink.

Anyway, he's probably going to be fine but just in case, maybe say a little bun prayer that his tummy stays healthy. And that this hasn't damaged his psyche from thinking he was abandoned! Poor Simone. :(

I left a message for the petsitting agency, so they KNOW I am not happy. This is UNBELIEVABLE. It's a really good thing our trip was not any longer!!!

Santa came to our house yesterday wearin' a brown suit that said UPS. He left two boxes on the porch and I didn't pay any attention, 'til I heard Mama and Dadda saying my Christmas present was in there. One present in TWO boxes?

So they were openin' it up last night and not tellin' me what it is. From the bits and pieces I heard, they're giving me the present early instead of making me wait a whole month. B-b-b-ut they haven't let me at it yet. Grrrr! *THUMP*

Anybun got any idea what it could be? All I know is it came in two boxes, and Dadda had to pick it up 'cause Mama couldn't lift it. Is it a heavy carrot? Hmmm... a bun can only wonder.

My 5 Things:

1. I have been in a French bistro while my parents ate lunch. After the waitress mentioned what they do with rabbits, I have no wish to return to that place.

2. I often miss when aiming to wee in my litterbox. However, much to Mama's chagrin, my aim for the food dish is 100% perfection. This is an excellent way to get my dish cleaned... and often refilled! Hrmph.

3. I have been caught under a hotel bed, glancing innocently through the pages of She-Males magazine. (Disclaimer: This is not a habit, and I was only interested in said magazine for its shredding potential. Honest!)

4. I'm a bunny and have a blog. Blogging buns are among the elite in bun society. Hrmph.

5. I adore my Fi. I often daydream about what we would name our bunchildren if we were able have them. *nose wiggle*

My parents rock! Dadda ordered me a special new water bottle that doesn't leak! Nice, considering that my last few bottles have led them to return home and find me wading in the shallow end on several days! Hrmph.

This bottle is awesome. Mama mounted it on my cage last night and I approached immediately. Good bottle. I'll try to post a picture later.

P.S. - Mama is bummed out. She mumbled somethin' about turning 30 tomorrow. She didn't say what she's gonna turn... maybe turn over in a tanning bed? Or maybe she's doing a complicated driving maneuver? Either way, 30 times sure sounds like a lot. Hrmph! *binkie*

Well, I got a new litterbox already but Mama says now we're going to granny's (her Mama) for Christmas a couple days. Word is that I'm gonna be in my smaller cage because the big one won't fit in the car. Hrmph! Mama better get me somethin' good to make up for this. Better than being alone on Christmas I guess.

Dear Santa,

I have been a good boy.
It really wasn't my fault what happened at Bastya's Office party. It was Fiona who spiked the punch with too much Sun Drop. I can't help it if I drank 13 glasses. It was so good---smelled and tasted just like burnt sage.

I thought it was funny when I put Orlando's harness on my head and danced the binkie on the litterbox while singing `Walk This Way'. I didn't mean to break Bastya's telephone and don't know why Bastya would accuse me of arson.

I don't remember calling Pratt's wife a scary chicken---even though she looked like one with red eye shadow and orange lipstick!

And when I threw up on JueDee's husband's nose, it was only because I ate too much of that pellets.

After all that fun, I admit I was a little tired. So I fell asleep on my way home and drove my tricycle through my neighbor's wall. I don't think that was any reason for my neighbor to call me a shameless turkey and have me arrested for theft!

So, Santa...here I sit in my jail cell on Christmas Eve, all goofy and overwhelmed. And I'm really not to blame for any of this cheesy stuff. Please bring me what I want the most---bail money!

After Mama emptied my litter today, she was cleaning my cage. She uses a damp paper towel to rub down the sides of the cage, remove floating bits of hair, and gather loose debris. Well, as you other buns might have guessed, I have a thing for paper towels. Paper towels are good snacks! Especially those Bounty select-a-size. Mama didn't have any select-a-size this time, but whatever it was, it still tempted my teethies and I just had to lunge at it.

So there we were, me with a bit of the paper towel in my mouth, and Mama holding the rest of it. She said, "Leave it. Leave it!" Well, I ate it!

Um... the dog is the one she took to training, NOT me. I don't have a clue what "leave it" means.

Hrmph. Well, at least that's what I told her.

Earlier this week, he overheard a certain female bun telling one of his friends how good snap peas are. He's been begging for snap peas ever since! So I gave him one tonight, and he tasted it. He seemed to want more, but refused to come out of his cage for it. When I put my hands in his cage to nudge him, he nipped me. I tried to groom him, and he nipped some more (fine, since he's shedding badly and I tend to pull tufts of unattached hair from his butt so I deserved a good nipping). When I put the snap pea in front of him, he nudged it away with his face. Then he did the bunny flop.

Simone doesn't act sick - he still ate his greens and hay. He didn't outright reject the snap pea, so I doubt it's the food I offered him, but maybe he is angry at me?

UH OH. It's cause I ate one of his papaya tablets today, isn't it?

(After shipping, a grand total of $68.31 but Mama says I'm worth every penny.)

Thanks for that nudge for the bigger bottle of papaya tablets, Fiona. That and some nose kisses from me convinced you-know-who. And thanks everyone for your recommendations. I picked the oat hay since I still have some orchard grass left, and it just sounded better. Wish they had an in-between size bag though, cause I would have gotten more!

No hay was ordered last night. We both forgot about it because Mama got a phone call that yielded very sad news.

Mama said she appreciates all the responses and suggestions about the Oxbow hay products, and she really is going to get them for me in the next day or two. I'll be sure to stay on her about that, and you'll be the first to know when my hay is ordered.

I finally convinced Mama to order me some papaya tablets from Oxbow. She's also getting me some of the early-cut Western Timothy hay. And my Bunny Basics timothy pellets. MMMmmmm!

We have two questions though:

1) How many papaya tablets to buy? The 500 count bottle is a better deal, but since only one tablet daily is suggested, would the excess tablets go bad before I eat them? Mama is pretty strict on my treats, so one daily is all I would get. How long do the tablets stay fresh or hold nutritional value for preventing hairballs?

2) Mama wants to get me one other kind of hay to try, in a smaller bag. Last time, she got me the Orchard Grass. I like that a bunch. But we're wondering if any of the others would be better, so place your vote today!

Options are:
Go for the Orchard Grass again, it's the best!
Oat hay - it rocks!
Or let us know if you have another suggestion.

Remember, Mama is placing the order tonight, so get your opinion in before it's too late. I want the bunnies and other furries who have tried this stuff to be heard. Your input is valuable.
